Who it applies to

Employees in the national system who are not covered by a modern award or a registered agreement. Where an award covers the job, its minimum rates apply instead and may be higher. The Fair Work Commission’s own figures show how few are paid it: about 21.1% of all employees, almost 2.8 million people, are paid an award’s minimum rate, while only what the Commission calls a negligible fraction of the workforce is actually paid the National Minimum Wage itself. For the other end of the scale, the average salary page has what full-time adults earn on average, after tax.

So if an award covers your job, its rate is the one to check, and Fair Work’s Pay and Conditions Tool finds it by award and classification. This site does not compute award rates; once you have yours, the pay calculator turns it into take-home pay, and the PAYG withholding calculator shows what your employer takes from each pay. Lower rates may apply to juniors, apprentices, trainees and employees with disability whose disability affects their productivity.

When it changes

Once a year, in the Fair Work Commission’s Annual Wage Review. This year’s decision, [2026] FWCFB 3500, was announced on 2 June 2026 and its order took effect on 1 July 2026. Higher pay starts from the first full pay period on or after 1 July.

That decision raised award wages by 4.75%. The National Minimum Wage is tied to the lowest award rate for ongoing work, called C13, and the Commission gave that rate an extra step on top — the first of three that will phase the C13 level out — so the minimum wage rose by more than 4.75%. The Commission estimates the extra step reaches around 100,000 of the lowest-paid employees.

Because the new rate takes effect from 1 July — in pay, from the first full pay period on or after it — and the new tax year starts the same day, both halves of the after-tax figure move together. The 2026-27 tax brackets are what this page uses, and the pay rise calculator shows what any rise is worth after tax.

Frequently asked questions

Is the minimum wage before or after tax?
Before. Both the hourly and the weekly figure are gross pay, which is how Fair Work states them. On a full-time week, $1,004.90, the year's income tax and Medicare levy come to about $128.66 a week, so a year of it leaves about $876.24 a week. Each weekly pay is a little less than that, because your employer withholds $139 from it; the difference comes back at tax time. Super is not part of these figures — the result above shows it separately.
How much is the minimum wage over a year?
A full-time year at the National Minimum Wage is $52,254.80 before tax — 52 weeks of $1,004.90. Income tax and the Medicare levy on that are $6,690.36, which leaves $45,564.44. The tax is worked out on $51,254.80, because from 2026-27 eligible workers get a $1,000 standard deduction without needing receipts.
Do casual workers get more than the minimum wage?
Yes. A casual employee covered by the National Minimum Wage also gets a 25% casual loading, making the hourly rate $33.05. The loading is paid instead of the paid leave a permanent employee gets, so it is not a bonus. Thirty-eight casual hours come to $1,255.90 a week before tax and about $1,043.15 after it.
Does the National Minimum Wage apply to me?
Probably not directly. It is the floor for employees in the national system who are not covered by an award or a registered agreement, and the Fair Work Commission says only a negligible fraction of the workforce is actually paid it. If an award covers your job, its minimum rates apply instead — they may be higher, and can be lower for an introductory period or for juniors, apprentices and trainees. Fair Work’s Pay and Conditions Tool finds the rate for your award and classification; the figure it gives you can be run through this site’s pay calculator for the after-tax version.
