Where your pay rise goes

Enter your details above to see this.

A single resident, 2026-27 rates, the rise for a full year, super paid on top. Back pay for a rise dated earlier is not shown here.

A rise meets the tax rate on your top dollars — your marginal rate — not the average rate across your whole salary. Once your income is high enough to pay tax, that rate is the higher of the two, so your take-home grows by a smaller percentage than your pay.

Where the rest of your rise goes

Each extra dollar is taxed at the rate of the band it lands in, plus the 2% Medicare levy. Two things make the rate on a rise higher than the bracket alone in the lower ranges: between $37,500 and $66,667 the low income tax offset shrinks as income rises, and just above the Medicare threshold the levy phases in at 10c a dollar. A study loan repayment rises with income as well. All of it is in the figure above. The tax brackets are the bands themselves, and the pay calculator shows the whole year at any salary.

This year’s award increase

If you are paid under a modern award, its minimum rates rose 4.75% from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026, after the Fair Work Commission’s Annual Wage Review. The minimum wage page has the National Minimum Wage after tax, which rose by more than the award increase this year.

When it shows up in your pay

Your employer works out each pay’s withholding from the new salary, so the extra arrives from the first pay at the new rate. The PAYG withholding calculator shows what is taken from a single pay; the year’s figure above is worked out on the assumptions under the calculator, and your assessment settles the real one. A one-off bonus is withheld differently, and the bonus tax calculator shows how.

Frequently asked questions

How much of a pay rise do I actually keep?
It depends on the tax rate on your top dollars, not your average rate. A $10,000 rise on $80,000 adds $6,800 to your take-home, so you keep 68%: $3,000 goes in income tax at 30c a dollar and $200 in the Medicare levy.
Can a pay rise push me into a higher tax bracket and leave me worse off?
Not through the tax brackets, the Medicare levy or a study loan. Only the dollars above a bracket's threshold are taxed at the higher rate; everything below keeps its old rate. This calculator checks it: a $100 rise at every $250 of salary from $0 to $400,000, with and without a study loan, raises take-home pay in 2026-27. The smallest share kept is 43%, around $191,000 with a study loan. It does not model the Medicare levy surcharge.
Who gets the 4.75% pay rise in 2026?
The Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review decision of 2 June 2026 raised the minimum rates in modern awards by 4.75%, from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026; the National Minimum Wage rose by more. On a $60,000 award salary that is $72.89 more take-home a fortnight. Fair Work's Pay and Conditions Tool shows the rate for your award.
Does my employer pay more super when I get a pay rise?
Yes. The super guarantee is 12% of your qualifying earnings — since 1 July 2026 the ATO's term for the pay it is worked out on — so it rises with your pay and is paid on top: a $10,000 rise brings $1,200 more super a year. It stops rising once your salary passes the maximum contribution base, $270,830 a year in 2026-27.
How does a pay rise affect my HECS repayment?
Since 2025-26 the compulsory repayment grows smoothly with income above the first threshold, $69,528 in 2026-27, instead of jumping on your whole income at each band as it did before, so a rise adds a share of each extra dollar. On $100,000, a $5,000 rise adds $750 to the repayment, and you keep 53% of the rise.
How much extra a fortnight is a $5,000 pay rise?
On a salary of $80,000, $130.77 a fortnight after tax, or $65.38 a week. The other $1,600 of the year's rise goes in tax and the Medicare levy.
